DE Haan was elected in 2007 as one of the most beautiful villages of Flanders. It counts over 12000 inhabitants on its territory that stretches about De Haan, Wenduine, Vosseslag, Harendijke, Klemskerke and Vlissegem. It was spurred on by king Leopold II to be built in Belle Epoque style by architect William Kidner., The king inaugurated the golf course on the first of July 1903. De Haan has all the while been host to big names on holiday such as Empress Zita of Austria, Valerius de Saedeleer, James Ensor, Alfons Blomme, Maurits Maerlinck, Emile Verhaeren, Stefan Zweig, Gerald Walschap and Albert Einstein.
